Don’t Be Afraid, It’s a Chicken!

Confidence and Surprise

I brought in a chicken to discuss how animals and ecologies interact at Mezzacello Urban Farm. I brought in chicken #23 so they could get used to holding an animal and gaining confidence and competence in holding animals. Don’t be afraid, It’s a chicken!

Can The Chicken Come Bock Bock?!

The chicken was a big hit! The first day of “Sustainability in Nature” at the new Metro Schools Middle and High School building on East 19th Avenue started off with a small bang when I brought in three quail. The students were intrigued by the quail, but the bigger than life personality of the chicken really caught their attention.

It was a struggle getting the students to recognize that chickens can carry germs. They were so excited to interact with the chicken and to hold it. I must have said, remember, wash your hands or use hand sanitizer at least 50 times. This is a lot easier to manage at Mezzacello Urban Farm as I have outdoor sinks with soap and water everywhere there.

Perhaps if the chicken comes back, she’ll come back with a portable handwashing sink. They are currently empty at the farm and frozen to the ground! I’ll bring one in when the temps rise above freezing. Until then, wash your hands and use hand sanitizer!
