Entering a New Phase of My Mission
Living at Mezzacello Urban Farm and building out my 21st Century Urban Farm like I have, there is one statement I wish I had a nickle for every time I heard it:
I think I am entering a new phase of my mission. And I am calling it PALs (Portable Ag Lab station). I am also building one for the environment (PETs) and one for data and research (PODs).
Grow, Maintain, Sustain, Explain — On Wheels
I have been wanting to do this kind of outreach to schools and other community gardens and community centers. It’s hard to get kids and groups to Mezzacello. So I started building out mobile systems that I could do outreach to schools. I built a mobile classroom first and used that all summer outdoors to teach with and it worked great!
I learned the power and value of making hands on learning mobile while I was working at the PAST Foundation. There I learned what wheels work best on concrete, on wood, and on linoleum and what power needs I was expected to have. At Mezzacello, I have a different set of parameters that I have to deal with.
Dirt, Mud, Grass, Kids and Stuff
I have co-designed everything here at Mezzacello to not only be mobile, but also to have a suspension system. All of the portable labs come with their own wheels, power, regeneration, and resources on board. Power comes from solar panels and batteries with built-in DC or inverter tech, and water is recycled from pond water at Mezzacello.
All systems are also designed to be used outdoors and to be completely waterproof. As I keep evolving this technology, I will try to incorporate any innovation into the systems. My goal is to bring a Portable Additive Design station on board for Spring 2025.
