Multiple Career Hats at Mezzacello

At Mezzacello Urban Farm we wear many hats! This is a brief gallery of hats worn in one week of summer camps. This was a biomechanics camp.

We explore a lot of career opportunities here at Mezzacello. Each career requires a new attitude and a different hats. It isn’t just gardening; It’s growing food in low earth orbit or mars, working with UV light to sterilize and clean, building out new machines and tools, and of course care of the animals!

The more STEM there is in the camps, the more STEM in the name of the camp title. So I asked the kids to come up with new titles based on what they loved about each camp. Here they are below.

Renaming Summer Camps

Traditionally, my summer camps have been named after the STEM designation that I was seeking. For example, BioTech, BioEngineering, BioChemistry, BioMechanics, and Quantum Effects. One of my board members, Dr. Chris Atchison, asked me to defer to the kids for names for the camps.

This was a genius move. It turns out the kids were terrified by the STEM names of the camps. After day three they were cool. But up until then, they thought I was a #MadScientist; and they were right.

The heart of Mezzacello has always been the people, the animals, the plants, and the ecologies working together. So I have been asking the kids what they would tell their friends what camps they had gone to. This is the result.

Make it easy to talk about at the dinner table.

New Names and More Data

  • BioTech - Robots, Animals, Energy, and Veterinarians

  • BioEngineering - Make Things Work: Like Nature Does

  • BioChemistry - Atoms and Animals

  • BioMechanics: How Nature Works

  • BioDiversity: Animals, Plants, and Everything Else

  • Quantum Effects - Natural Magic - Big and Small

What do you think of their revised titles? I think they are cute. I will workshop the rest of the camps for names.
